Cummings Statement on the Passing of President George H.W. Bush
Baltimore, MD (December 1, 2018)—Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (MD-07) issued the following statement on the passing of President George H.W. Bush:
“Today I join the nation in mourning the loss of President George H.W. Bush, our 41st president. President Bush came upon this earth and worked tirelessly to make it a better place. He loved his country and lived a life of courageous service.”
“A World War II hero, he spent 40 years serving his country in various leadership positions including U.S Congressman, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and Director of the CIA. He was an honorable statesman who pledged as president to make the United States a ‘kinder, gentler’ nation.”
“Following his presidency, President Bush continued to answer the call to service by leading efforts to raise money for relief after the Southeast Asian tsunami of 2004 and Hurricane Katrina.”
“In addition to leading our country, he was the head of a family that espoused his commitment to government service. My thoughts and prayers are with the Bush family and I hope they will find some comfort in knowing that after just a few months of separation, President Bush now joins Barbara, his beloved wife of 73 years."
