Cummings to Speak at Press Conference Opposing Title X Funding Cuts and the Domestic Gag Rule

July 20, 2018
Press Release

Baltimore, MD (July 20, 2018) —  Monday, July 23rd, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD) will join Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, and Representatives Dutch Ruppersberger and John Sarbanes, as well as Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen and Mayor Catherine Pugh, at a press conference outlining the harm of potential Title X funding cuts due to the new “gag” rule.

On June 1, 2018, the Department of Health and Human services proposed a rule to severely restrict the activities of health care providers receiving Title X funds by preventing them from informing women about the full range of healthcare options available to them, from referring patients to other qualified providers for abortion services, and from ensuring women have access to all forms of acceptable and “medically approved” birth control.

“The changes made by this proposed rule would greatly impede women’s access to family planning resources and ensure that low-income women have fewer health care providers to rely upon for comprehensive, quality reproductive care,” Cummings said. “The Trump Administration is trying to insert itself into one of the most intimate conversations between a patient and health care provider.  This is just another example of the Republican obsession with closing Planned Parenthood, and the Trump Administration’s all-out assault on health care.”
