Press Release

Washington, DCToday, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) joined his colleagues in passing the Conference Report for the 2010 Budget Resolution, an economic blueprint to put our nation back on track and lay the foundation for lasting prosperity and economic growth. The bill passed by a vote of 233-193.

“Today marks the end of the Era of Irresponsibility under President Bush and the Republican-led Congress that turned the record $5.6 trillion surplus under President Clinton into a record $5.8 trillion deficit,” Congressman Cummings said. “This budget reflects President Obama’s plan to get our economy moving again, making our nation stronger and giving American families the tools to achieve prosperity.”

The budget includes $1.7 trillion in tax cuts for middle class families and will cut the deficit by nearly two-thirds by 2010. It also makes an historic commitment to veterans, increasing funding for veterans’ health care and other services by nearly 12 percent.

Additionally, the budget makes strategic investments in education, health care reform, and clean energy jobs to jumpstart the economy and keep America globally competitive for years to come. It creates a deficit-neutral reserve fund for health care reform as well as a College Affordability Initiative and builds on the Recovery Act’s historic investments in Title I, Special Education, and Pell grants, as well as the significant funding and tax incentives to invest in clean energy and energy efficiency.

“For the first time in years, we have an honest budget that invests in our nation’s future and restores fiscal responsibility,” Congressman Cummings said. “President Obama and the Democratic-led Congress have once again followed through on our promises to put our country back on track.”
