Washington, DC – Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement after Education Week designated Maryland Public Schools the nation’s highest ranked school system for the fifth year in a row:

“I am tremendously proud to congratulate Maryland State Superintendent Lillian M. Lowery, the Maryland State Department of Education, our administrators, educators and students for earning the designation of #1 best public school system in the country for a fifth consecutive year.

“Achieving this unprecedented honor underscores our state’s commitment to preparing world-class citizens and our belief that every child has a right and expectation to have a world-class education.

“I applaud our public school system for showing once more that every child can succeed when equipped with the right resources and supported by adults who are committed to their success.  Congratulations!”
