Congressman Cummings Joins Colleagues in Designating Cal Ripken Way

Washington, D.C. — startwidainctext Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (Md.-07), joined his colleagues in supporting legislation he co-sponsored, H.R. 3218, to designate part of I-395 in Baltimore as “Cal Ripken Way.”
“Cal Ripken, Jr., represents the very best that we have ever seen in the game of baseball and has come to represent the very best of our community by building in our young people the same dedication to excellence that he brought to his career,” Congressman Cummings said. “I can think of no more fitting way to honor the Iron Man than naming the Interstate that passes Camden Yards, where he played his entire career.”
Cal Ripken, Jr., played 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, during which time he broke Lou Gehrig’s record for consecutive appearances by playing in 2,632 consecutive games. He finished his career with more than 3,000 hits, including 431 homeruns, and was recently elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame.
Since leaving baseball, Ripken has continued to motivate and inspire, dedicating himself to the community. He established and manages the Cal Ripken Baseball Division, and he joined his brother in establishing the Cal Ripken Senior Foundation to give underprivileged youth the opportunity to participate in baseball.
“Cal has synchronized his personal character with his physical abilities and has consistently used his extraordinary gifts to make a difference in the lives of others,” Congressman Cummings said. “I thank Congressman John Sarbanes for introducing this legislation, and I thank my colleagues for recognizing the incredible legacy of service on and off the field that Cal Ripken has given not only to the City of Baltimore, but to our nation as well.”
